Southern Miss Softball Takes on Nicholls and Southern University This Weekend

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team dives into its second week of action by playing in a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday, while also competing in a single game on Saturday.
To kick off the weekend, the Golden Eagles head to Thibodaux, Louisiana to match up against Nicholls in a doubleheader starting at 4 and 6 p.m. (CT). The next day, Saturday, Southern Miss remains on the road to face off with Southern University at 1 p.m. (CT) in Baton Rouge. Two final contests of the action-packed weekend will then be played at home, with the Golden Eagles playing host to Southern University in a 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. (CT) doubleheader.
The last time out
Last week, Southern Miss hosted North Dakota, Murray State and Southern Illinois in the Black and Gold Invitational. Southern Miss ended the tournament with a record of 2-1 having faced two different opponents over the weekend. Southern Miss contended against Murray State once winning, 3-0, and split games with North Dakota. The Golden Eagles were victorious in game one against the Fighting Hawks on Saturday, 3-0 but then lost to the North Dakota, 4-2 on Sunday in an extra innings contest.

The Nicholls State Colonels lead the series with an all-time record of 10-8. The last time the two teams met was April 16, 2019, resulting in a strong victory for the Golden Eagles 7-1. In the previous 10 games played, the Golden Eagles and the Colonels are tied at five games apiece.

Southern Miss is heading into this weekend leading the series with an all-time record of 7-0. Since their first matchup in 2010 the Golden Eagles have not dropped a game to Jaguars. Each of the previous two contests in 2020 and 2019 were ended after 5 innings by Southern Miss enacting the run rule.
Southern Miss and Jackson State will meet on Tuesday, February 23, in a home doubleheader. The first pitch from the Southern Miss Softball Complex is scheduled for 4 p.m. (CT).
