Second Half Struggles Cost Lady Eagles

DENTON, Texas – A furious rally attempt in the second quarter wasn't enough, as North Texas opened the third quarter on a 12-0 run and coasted to a 76-55 victory over the Lady Eagles on Friday Night at The Super Pit.

"We'll have to lace our boots up and get ready for tomorrow," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "We've done this before. Tomorrow, will be a challenge for us. We have to regroup and figure out what we're going to do differently."

Kelsey Jones finished just shy of her second-straight double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds in the contest, while Daishai Almond joined her as the only other Lady Eagle in double figures with 11 points.

Trailing by 15 after the opening quarter of play, Southern Miss (6-7, 4-7 C-USA) responded with a 9-0 run to cut the North Texas (10-4, 7-2 C-USA) lead down to just six in the opening minutes of the second quarter. The Black and Gold were able to get the lead all the way down to one point with less than a minute but went into the locker room trailing by three.

Coming out of the break, Southern Miss would be held without a field goal until Jones hit a lay-up with 3:05 left on the clock. By that point, the Mean Green had once again taken control of the game and would go on to defeat the Lady Eagles allowing the Black and Gold to score just four points in the third stanza.

Southern Miss and North Texas will conclude their series tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
