MOBILE, Ala. – Melyia Grayson and Macy Weaver both posted double-doubles as Southern Miss women's basketball raced past South Alabama, 71-51, on Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Center.
"Macy was really strong for us crashing the glass and Melyia had a great first half," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "Melyia really kept us in the game in the first half, but Macy came in and was a difference maker for us in the second half with her rebounding and getting shots at the rim."
For Southern Miss, it marked the first time that the Lady Eagles had two players with a double-double in the same game since Kelsey Jones and Respect Leaphart did so at Western Kentucky back in 2019.
Grayson, who matched a career-high with 21 points on Wednesday night at Georgia State, got it done once again on the offensive end, as she went 9-of-20 from the field and hit all three of her free-throws to collect back-to-back games with 21 points. The Hattiesburg native equaled a career-best with 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and third of her career.
Transfer Macy Weaver posted career-best in both points and rebounds, with the graduate student going for 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting along with 11 boards. Weaver was the catalyst for the Lady Eagles in the second half, scoring eight of her 13 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Playing a tight game through the first quarter, Southern Miss closed the half on a 19-9 run that was highlighted by an and-1 finish from Weaver to take a 37-28 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the break, Southern Miss turned up the intensity on defense, as they held the Jags to just 10 points and a 17.6% shooting clip over the third period to go up 59-38 headed into the final stanza.
It was more of the same in the fourth, with the Black and Gold getting it done defensively, allowing McNelis to empty the bench. The Lady Eagles limited South Alabama to just six made fields over the final 20 minutes to secure the victory and wrap up a sweep over future Sun Belt Conference opponents on the season.
Southern Miss will take the week off for final exam before returning on Monday, Dec. 13 against Blue Mountain College for their nonconference home finale. Tipoff against the Toppers is set for 6 p.m. from Reed Green Coliseum.
