BOCA RATON, Fla. -- A slow start in the first quarter led to Southern Miss' first loss in six games, as the Lady Eagles fell to the Richmond Spiders to close out the FAU Pre-Christmas Tournament with a record of 1-1. Southern Miss fell to 8-3 following its 87-75 loss to the Spiders to finish nonconference play.
The Lady Eagles were unable to contain Richmond's offense, specifically from three-point range, throughout the contest. Southern Miss allowed the Spiders to shoot at a percentage of 53.3 from the field and 12-of-28 from beyond the arc.

Southern Miss also recorded eight three-pointers, the most in a single game this season, and shot at a percentage of 47.1 from deep.
Gross' 15 points ties a season-high and her five three-pointers is the most she has netted in her collegiate career. Almond recorded the most points of her senior campaign to go along with four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Rose Warren aided her team defensively, with a career-high four steals.
Southern Miss opened the first quarter with a 5-0 run, sparked by a three-pointer from Davis. Richmond responded with a prolonged 20-point run, which was finally stopped after five minutes of play by a layup from Gray.
Richmond held a commanding 25-13 lead at the end of the first. Turnovers and inconsistent defense were the main issues for the Lady Eagles throughout the first 10 minutes of play, as Southern Miss allowed the Spiders to shoot 10-of-18 from the field and conceded five turnovers. The Black and Gold also struggled to generate offense, with a shooting percentage of 29.4.
The Lady Eagles' woes continued into the second frame, as Richmond battered Southern Miss with efficient three-point shooting. A six-point run in 45 seconds propelled the Spiders to a 39-20 lead with just over six minutes to play in the first half.
Southern Miss and Richmond would trade baskets for the remainder of the quarter, as Lauren Gross netted a three-pointer with a second remaining in the frame. However, Southern Miss entered the second half with a 52-36 deficit.
The Spiders shot effectively from all areas in the second quarter, troubling Southern Miss on defense. Richmond finished the frame with 27 points and shot 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. USM had a much better half offensively, with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, but still trailed by 16 at the half.

Almond and Weaver both shot 3-of-3 from the field in the third quarter with six points, but these efforts were not enough to change the tide of the game.
Southern Miss cut Richmond's lead to single-digits for the first time since the second quarter following a five-point run from the Lady Eagles, capped off by a layup from Meylia Grayson.
However, the Spiders retaliated with a six-point swing of their own, extending their lead to 76-62 with 6:34 remaining in the game. The Black and Gold were unable to close the distance throughout the remainder of the fourth and fell to the Spiders in the first-ever matchup between the programs.
