BOCA RATON, Fla. – Four different Lady Eagles scored in double figures for the first time this season, as Southern Miss outlasted Alabama A&M, 70-55, on Sunday afternoon in their first game of the FAU Pre-Christmas tournament.
"I thought it was a great team win," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "We had a season-low of 12 turnovers, that's an improvement. We also had an offensive rebound on 50-percent of our misses. Our goal was 18 and we were able to hit that number."
The Lady Eagles have now won five-straight and move to 8-2 on the season with the victory.
Jones posted a season-high 13 points, while fellow center Melyia Grayson added her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Joining the two post players in double figures were guards Domonique Davis and Daishai Almond. Davis, who had 14 points, led the Lady Eagles in scoring for the fifth time this season.
Almond got the offense going in the first quarter with a pair of layups to start and finish a 7-0 run for Southern Miss.
The Nasty Bunch defense for the Lady Eagles swarmed in the first half, with USM allowing a season-low 23 points and held the Bulldogs to a 29-percent shooting clip in the opening two quarters to take a 29-23 advantage into the break.
After Alabama A&M tied the game out of the locker room, Southern Miss answered on another seven to nothing run, highlighted by an and-1 play from Brikayla Gray, who finished the game with nine points. The two teams went back and forth in the third, with Southern Miss clinging to a six point advantage going into the final period.
The Lady Eagles held the Bulldogs without a point for nearly five minutes midway through the final period to push their lead out to as many as 17 in the quarter and close out the game.
Southern Miss finishes non-conference play tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Richmond.
