HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Despite Jaron Pierre, Jr. knocking down a career-high six three-pointers, the Southern Miss men's basketball team fell 62-51 to Jacksonville on Tuesday night inside Reed Green Coliseum. The Golden Eagles fall to 4-6 after dropping the final home game of the non-conference slate.Â
Southern Miss had its fifth-best shooting output of the season, finishing 40 percent from the floor. On the flip side, the Golden Eagles held Jacksonville to 37 percent from the floor on 20-of-54 shooting. The Golden Eagles shot 44 percent from behind the three-point line, but the Dolphins knocked down one more three-pointer to take the advantage from deep. Pierre finished with a season-high 18 points after not scoring in double figures since the game on Nov. 25 against UC San Diego. The New Orleans, La. native finished with 13 in that game.Â
Southern Miss jumped to a seven-point lead out of the gates after Rashad Bolden, Tyler Stevenson, and Pierre each knocked down three consecutive shots. The Dolphins answered back by rattling off eight points to take a one-point lead five minutes into the ballgame. The two schools traded blows for much of the first half before Jacksonville went on a 12-0 run with 5:38 left in the half to go up by 11 points. Jacksonville capitalized on a slew of Southern Miss turnovers during that stretch and the Golden Eagles were only able to knock down a free throw to cut the deficit to 10 before heading into half.Â
Pierre led all Golden Eagles at the half with six points on two three-pointers, but junior Isaih Moore contributed with five points of his own. Bolden dished out three first-half assists, and Stevenson grabbed five rebounds. Southern Miss shot 38 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, compared to Jacksonville's 30 percent. The Golden Eagles turned the ball over 11 times in the first half and forced four.Â
Stevenson nailed a pair of free throws to go along with a Pierre triple to cut the Jacksonville lead to seven early in the second half, but a string of three three-pointers extended the Dolphins' lead to 18 in less than two minutes. Mo Arnold, who transferred to Southern Miss from Jacksonville during the summer, started an 11-0 run to put the deficit back to seven -- Pierre added two more three-pointers in the two-minute stretch. Southern Miss kept Jacksonville scoreless from the floor for nearly five minutes, but Carson Brown hit four free-throws to give Jacksonville added comfort.Â
After a Jacksonville jumper extended the lead back to 13 with 9:17 left in the game, Walyn Napper finished an and-one before Tyler Morman and Bolden knocked down back-to-back shots to trim the deficit to seven. Moore hit a pair of free throws to make it a six-point game with 2:40 left, but Jacksonville hit a three-pointer and jump shot to build the lead back to 11. The Golden Eagles would answer back with a Stevenson bucket, but Jacksonville ultimately held on for the 11-point win.Â
Stevenson's 10 points puts him at 904 career points, which moves him into 47th all-time in the Southern Miss history books. The Columbus, Miss. native added eight rebounds to go along with three blocks and one steal. Bolden dished out a team-high four assists and Napper finished with two steals. Moore was the only other Golden Eagles besides Pierre to knock down a three-pointer. The Southern Miss bench outscored Jacksonville's bench 17-14. The Golden Eagles also outrebounded the Dolphins, 34-33.Â
Southern Miss will return to action at ULM on Saturday, Dec. 18. Tip from Monroe, La. is schedule for 2 p.m.Â
