ATLANTA, Ga. – Melyia Grayson matched a career high with 21 points, and the Lady Eagles prevailed 64-56 over Georgia State at the GSU Sports Arena on Wednesday night.
"I thought our guards did a great job of getting the ball into the post," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "We really did well feeding the ball to Melyia and Kelsey and the rest of our post players. It feels good to go on the road and get a win."
Grayson started the game a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor to match the offense production of the Panthers on her own. The Lady Eagles opened the game by shooting 64.3% from the floor to hold a seven point advantage after the opening 10 minutes of play.
Fellow sophomore Rose Warren dished out a career-high seven assists, with six of her helpers coming in the first half to help guide the Southern Miss offense. Of the 16 made buckets in the first half, 10 came off assists, and 22 of the Black and Gold's 33 points came inside the paint.
The game slowed down in the third quarter, with USM taking just 10 shots in the frame. The Golden Eagles locked in defensively though, holding Georgia State without a field goal over the final 5:03 to go into the final quarter up by seven.
Domonique Davis took control in the final 10 minutes, as she scored seven of her 13 in the closing quarter of play to help push Southern Miss to victory. Davis has now scored 10 or more in six-straight games for the Lady Eagles.
Returning to her home state, senior Daishai Almond joined Davis and Grayson in double figures with 10 points, while also dishing out four assists, grabbing three rebounds and swiping three steals.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday with another road contest against a future Sun Belt opponent, as the Lady Eagles travel to Mobile to take on South Alabama. Tipoff from the Mitchell Center is scheduled for 3 p.m.
