Lady Eagles Open Season with Education Day Against William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's basketball team will welcome thousands of local elementary students as they face cross-town rival William Carey in Reed Green Coliseum on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. as part of the Lady Eagles annual Education Day. Head coach Joye Lee McNelis enters the contest with 499 wins, and looks to become the 85th DI head women's basketball coach to reach the 500th win milestone with a win over the Crusaders. The matchup will be broadcast on CUSA.tv. Jason Baker will be on the call for the Southern Miss Radio Network, broadcast on 92.7 the Score and presented by Learfield. Scouting the Crusaders
• Head Coach Tracy English is in his 32nd year as the leader of the Crusaders in 2021-22.
• William Carey is off to a 1-0 start, after defeating Dillard, 62-58, on Thursday to open their season.
• The Lauren Rowley played all 40 minutes in the contest, going 7-of-16 from the field en route to a 23-point performance.
• The Lady Crusaders return a wealth of talent from last year's squad led by SSAC Co-Player of the Year and First Team All-SSAC selection McKinley Seal. Also back is First Team All-SSAC selection Rebekah Engle along with key contributors Tamia Stinson, Jamaya Galloway, Kyley Seals, Lauren Rowley, Gabrielle Gallup, and Morgan Jones.
• Newcomers for WCU will be Junior College transfers Jerryonne Owens (SWMCC), and Sabreya Lee (MDCC) plus two freshmen in Chaise Stinson and Mckalea Randall.
Scouting the Lady Eagles
• The Lady Eagles are 32-14 all-time in season openers.
• Under McNelis, Southern Miss is 13-4 to start the season and have won eight straight.
• The Lady Eagles return nine players from a team that went 7-12 last year, while welcoming in six newcomers.
