HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Golden Eagles hit the road for a mid-week non conference matchup with the Alabama State Lady Hornets. Southern Miss takes on the Hornets in Montgomery, Ala. on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 5 p.m.
Southern Miss enters this matchup with the Lady Hornets with a record of 11-15 and a C-USA mark of 3-9. The black and gold split a series with the LA Tech Lady Techsters last weekend, winning the opening on Friday in straight sets before falling in four frames on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles won their one and only matchup against a SWAC opponent this season, as Southern Miss opened the season with a 3-0 sweep of the MVSU Devilettes on Aug. 27. Alabama State is currently third in the SWAC, with a conference record of 10-2.
The black and gold have won all six prior contests against the Lady Hornets, including a five-set thriller in Hattiesburg on Oct. 2, 2019. Liana Guillemaud led the way for her squad, with 15 kills to propel the Golden Eagles past the Hornets.
Southern Miss travels to Montgomery to take on the Lady Hornets for the first time since Oct. 16, 2018. The Golden Eagles took home a victory in four sets in a match that saw Sarah Bell become the program's all-time assists leader. Southern Miss holds a 3-0 in matches against Alabama State on the road.
The Golden Eagles hold an 8-6 non conference record throughout the 2021 season and face their first opponent outside of the C-USA since Sept. 18. Following a busy Conference USA slate, Southern Miss looks to continue the success it had earlier in the season against non conference foes.
As a program, the Golden Eagles lead the C-USA in total team assists (1,174) and digs (1,557) and hold the second-most team kills (1,277) in the conference. Kenzie Smith's 962 assists are the eight highest-total in the NCAA and the highest in the conference.
