
Golden Eagles' Comeback Bid Falls Short in Five Sets against Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Golden Eagles' comeback fell just short to the Alabama State Lady Hornets on Thursday, Nov. 4. After falling behind 2-0, Southern Miss rallied to tie the match up before falling to the Lady Hornets in five sets (25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 15-25, 15-8). The Golden Eagles now hold a record of 11-16.
Mia Wesley led all hitters with 27 kills, while Lauren Talbert posted a double-double, with 14 kills and 13 digs. Kinsley Hanback finished the match with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .529.
Set One, Southern Miss 22, Alabama State 25: Southern Miss and Alabama State battled in a close first set, which saw the Lady Hornets win the frame by a score of 25-22. While the Golden Eagles finished the set with more kills than Alabama State, they were unable to win the frame and fell behind, 1-0.
Wesley led the Golden Eagles with five kills in the opening set, while Kenzie Smith dished out 12 assists on Southern Miss' 15 kills. Aliah Giroux led her squad with five digs in the first frame.
Set Two, Southern Miss 17, Alabama State 25: The deficit for Southern Miss increased in the second set, as Alabama State won the second frame and took a 2-0 lead on the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagle defense struggled to keep the Lady Hornets' offense contained, as Alabama State recorded 15 kills to Southern Miss' 13.
The Golden Eagles continued to hit at a consistent rate, with a team hitting percentage of .258. However, Southern Miss allowed the Lady Hornets to record a percentage of .625, which led to Alabama State taking the frame.
Set Three, Southern Miss 25, Alabama State 21: Southern Miss fought back and won a tightly contested third set to extend the match. The Golden Eagles cut into the Hornet lead with a 25-21 set victory.Â
Led by Wesley's seven kills, the Golden Eagles recorded 15 kills, compared to Alabama State's 12.
Southern Miss also controlled the Lady Hornet's offense, holding ASU to a hitting percentage of .175 while recording 20 team digs. Service aces from Giroux, Talbert and Lauren Seibert were key factors in the Golden Eagles claiming the set.
Set Four, Southern Miss 25, Alabama State 15: The Golden Eagles performed admirably in the fourth set, winning the frame decisively by a score of 25-15. Southern Miss was able to force a fifth set with a combination of overwhelming offense and shutdown defense.
Southern Miss recorded a hitting percentage of .324 in the fourth set, while holding the Hornets to a clip of .027. The defense stepped up when needed, holding Alabama State to eight kills, while racking up 21 digs and a pair of blocks.
Wesley and Talbert combined for nine of their team's 14 kills, while Smith and Ari Barksdale contributed solo blocks for the black and gold.
Set Five, Southern Miss 8, Alabama State 15: Southern Miss struggled to generate offense in the fifth and final set, as the Lady Hornets claimed the frame and match. Hanback contributed a pair of kills on four attempts, but it was not enough to overcome ASU.
