The Need to Know
Southern Miss and Louisiana will square off for the 56th time, but only for the third time since 1999. The Golden Eagles have dominated at Reed Green Coliseum, winning 21 of the 27 meetings in Hattiesburg. They have won the last four meetings and eight of the last 10 overall. In the season opener against William Carey on Tuesday night, junior Tae Hardy led all scorers with 30 points in the 81-67 win. Freshman Jaron Pierre, Jr. added 16 points on four three pointers.Â
Isaih Moore posted a double-double in his first outing as a Golden Eagle, going for 10 points and 11 rebounds. The junior hauled in a team-best three offensive rebounds. Tyler Stevenson, a Preseason All-Conference USA honoree, added seven points and six rebounds. Freshman Rashad Bolden came off the bench and provided 13 points while hitting six free throws. Tuesday's win gave the Golden Eagles their sixth-straight home-opening win and third under Jay Ladner. Southern Miss scored at least 80 points for the ninth time in Ladner's career and third-straigh time in a home opener. Â
Scouting the Ragin' Cajuns
Louisiana cruised past West Florida in their season opener, winning 81-47 in the Cajundome. Newcomer Jordan Brown recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks. The Cajuns also got a spark from Kobe Julien as the redshirt freshman added 12 points and three blocks. Kentrell Garnett scored 10 points and Theo Akwuba grabbed eight rebounds.Â
Louisiana is coming off a 17-9 campaign that included a run to the Sun Belt Conference semifinals where it eventually lost to Georgia State, 84-73. Akwuba is the only returner that averaged over 10 points last season and one of three starters that returned. Head coach Bob Marlin's Ragin' Cajuns beat Ladner twice while the Southern Miss coach was at Southeastern Louisiana a few years back.Â
