HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Â Following two historic sweeps last weekend, the Southern Miss volleyball team heads to Denton, Texas for a pair of Conference USA matchups. The Golden Eagles take on the North Texas Mean Green on Friday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 9.
The Golden Eagles head into this weekend riding a wave of momentum stemming from their matches against UTSA on Oct. 1-2. Southern Miss defeated the Roadrunners in both contests in straight sets, marking the first and second time the Golden Eagles swept UTSA in program history.
Mia Wesley recorded 26 kills over the two matches, leading the Golden Eagles offensively throughout the weekend. Liana Guillemaud made her first start of the season in Saturday's match, recording four crucial kills on six attempts in the third and final set of the series.
Southern Miss and North Texas have faced off 18 times prior to this weekend's series, with the Mean Green holding an 11-7 advantage in the all-time series. Southern Miss last faced North Texas in a pair of matches in Hattiesburg last year, with the Mean Green winning both matchups at the Wellness Center.Â
UNT has won the last seven matchups dating back to 2017. Southern Miss' last win in Denton was on Sept. 23, 2016, when the Golden Eagles knocked off the Mean Green, 3-1.
Both the Golden Eagles and Mean Green look to improve upon their 2-2 Conference USA records. Both programs have won their last two contests over C-USA opponents, as UNT knocked off LA Tech in a pair of matches last weekend.Â
The Mean Green enter this weekend with a 9-8 record, following a non-conference loss to No. 12 Baylor on Wednesday. North Texas holds a record of 4-5 at home, with a 2-0 record in Denton in C-USA play.
