HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team finds itself in fourth place after posted an eight-under par 280 over its second round Monday during the opening day of the Battle at Black Creek in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Being played at the par 72, 7,204-yard Black Creek Club, the Golden Eagles combined to shoot a six-under par over the final nine holes to push the squad up the team standings, placing them just eight strokes out of the lead.
"We got off to a sluggish start to both rounds," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "Not our best performance on the front nine at this course. Which is strange because it sets up good for our guys. However, we played the back nine brilliantly today. We made a lot of birdies to get our team bumped up the leaderboard."
UT Martin leads the way after 36 holes of play with a 14-under 562, followed by host Chattanooga (566), Tennessee Tech (568) and the Golden Eagles (570). Southern Miss opened the day by shooting a two-over 290 in the first round.
Four Southern Miss players collected below par over the final 18 holes, including freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.), who followed a 72 by carding his season-low round of 69 to finish the day as the highest of any Golden Eagle in the individual standings with a 10th-place tie with a three-under 141.
Sophomores Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) and Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) each are one stroke back of Dupuy with a 142 and a 15th-place tie. Rattanayanon fired rounds of 72 and a 70, while Latter put together a pair of 71s.
After posting a 75 in his opening round, senior Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) registered a 70 on his second circuit to hold a 145 and a 28th-place tie. Senior Hunter Atkins added a 75 and 73 for a 148 and a 50th-place tie.
"We feel very comfortable in this position," said Brescher of his team being in fourth heading into the final round Tuesday. "Being eight shots back is certainly doable for us to make up. We need to play well and get a bit of help from the leading teams. But we are playing from behind which brings with it an aggressive mindset."
The event gets started at 7:30 a.m. CT and fans can follow the live scoring by clicking here.
