Golden Eagles Fall in Four Sets to Rice

HOUSTON, Texas -- Despite strong performances on the offensive side of the ball, Southern Miss (10-14, 2-8 C-USA) fell in four sets to the (RV) Rice Owls on Saturday, Oct. 23.
The Golden Eagles secured their first set victory over the Owls since 2018 in the third frame and battled hard throughout the match. Mia Wesley led all attackers with 25 kills throughout the match.Â
Kenzie Smith recorded 39 assists, nine digs and three kills, while Lauren Talbert posted 11 digs and nine kills.
Set One, Southern Miss 11, Rice 25: Southern Miss was unable to overcome the Owls' offense, dropping the first set by a score of 25-11. The Golden Eagles kept pace with Rice at the start of the set, but an 8-0 run from the Owls put the frame out of reach.Â
Wesley recorded five kills in the opening set, while Lauren Seibert made the first start of her collegiate career. Smith recorded eight assists for the Golden Eagles, while the Southern Miss backcourt tallied 12 digs as a unit.
Set Two, Southern Miss 22, Rice 25: The Golden Eagles battled hard in a back and forth second set, but ultimately fell to the Owls by a score of 25-22. Southern Miss improved in every aspect of the match in the second frame, posting 14 kills, 18 digs and 13 assists.
Wesley added seven kills for the Golden Eagles in the second set, while Smith distributed 11 assists for her teammates. Lauren Talbert recorded a pair of kills and six of Southern Miss' 18 digs in the second set.
Set Three, Southern Miss 25, Rice 23: Southern Miss continued to build on the foundation set in the second frame and pushed past the Owls by a score of 25-23, winning its first set against Rice since 2018. The Golden Eagles posted a hitting percentage of .359 and posted 13 digs in the set.Â
Wesley and Talbert led the way for the Golden Eagles, combining for 13 of their team's 16 kills in the third set. Talbert and Legg tacked on three service aces for Southern Miss at crucial points during the frame. The Golden Eagles trailed, 2-1 heading into the fourth set.
Set Four, Southern Miss 14, Rice 25: The Golden Eagles were unable to hold the momentum, as Rice closed out the match with a 25-14 set win. Southern Miss was held to seven kills in the final set.

The Golden Eagles return home to the Volleyball Wellness Center next weekend for a pair of C-USA matches against LA Tech. Southern Miss takes the floor against the Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.Â
