Golden Eagles Secure Sweep Over LA Tech

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Golden Eagles (11-14, 3-8 C-USA) secured their third Conference USA sweep of the season on Friday night, as Southern Miss defeated the LA Tech Lady Techsters in straight sets (25-12, 25-20, 25-19). The Golden Eagles outplayed LA Tech throughout the match to secure their 10th home victory of the season for the first time since 2017.
Mia Wesley and Kinsley Hanback led the way for the Black and Gold offensively. Wesely led the charge with 18 kills, while Hanback posted nine kills with a hitting percentage of .692. Ari Barksdale provided a spark for the Golden Eagles in the third set, recording four blocks in the decisive frame.
Kenzie Smith posted 31 assists and six kills for Southern Miss throughout the match, while the Golden Eagle backcourt racked up 60 digs. The Golden Eagles improved to 25-4 against the Lady Techsters in the all-time series.
Set One, Southern Miss 25, LA Tech 12: A pair of early service aces from Aliah Giroux set the tone for the Golden Eagles in the first frame, as the Black and Gold opened the match with a 25-12 set victory. Southern Miss held off the Lady Techsters throughout the set and held the lead throughout the frame.Â
Hanback led all hitters in the opening frame with seven kills and a hitting percentage of .875. Wesley recorded six kills for the Golden Eagles, while Smith posted three kills and 14 assists to open the match.Â
As a unit, Southern Miss registered 19 kills with a hitting percentage of .516 and 16 assists. The Golden Eagle defense was just as impressive as their offense in set one, as they held the Lady Techsters to nine kills and registered 17 digs.
Set Two, Southern Miss 25, LA Tech 20: The Golden Eagles once again did not concede the lead throughout the second set and took the frame by a score of 25-20. Southern Miss registered 13 kills, 11 assists and 25 digs throughout the set.
Southern Miss took a commanding 14-8 lead off a service from Lauren Seibert, but a five-point run from LA Tech cut the Golden Eagle lead to 16-14. The Black and Gold were able to recover, outplaying the Lady Techsters throughout the rest of the frame and securing a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
The Golden Eagle backcourt led the way for Southern Miss in the second set, as they posted 25 digs and held LA Tech to nine kills and a hitting percentage of .047. While Southern Miss slowed down offensively from the first set, Wesley posted four kills for the Black and Gold throughout the second frame.
Set Three, Southern Miss 25, LA Tech 19: Southern Miss found itself down early in the third set to the Lady Techsters, as the Golden Eagle offense struggled. Ari Barksdale provided a spark for the Black and Gold, as she entered the match and recorded four total blocks. Southern Miss was able to overcome the deficit and completed the sweep, winning the third set by a score of 25-19.
Wesley added eight kills to her totals, finishing the match with 18, while Smith dished out 10 assists. Southern Miss held the Lady Techsters to a hitting percentage of .027 and improved to 11-14 on the season.
