Southern Miss Strikes Gold In El Paso

EL PASO, Texas – Brazilian senior Alice Campos (Campinas, Brazil-Northwestern Oklahoma State) powered Southern Miss to a 2-0 victory over the UTEP for the program's third straight win against the Miners on Friday night, Oct. 22 in El Paso. The Golden Eagles maintain their first-place spot in C-USA West Division with 14 points and a 4-1-2 conference record. The Black and Gold are now 8-3-2 on the season.
"Our players executed. They were forced to think and they were able to solve problems tonight. Great team win," noted Assistant Coach Carly Mauldin.
Campos struck gold twice for the Black and Gold, grabbing a goal in both halves. Freshman Ilana Izquierdo (Cali, Colombia-Commeva) continued her offensive magic providing an assist while freshman Adaira Nakano (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) tallied her second assist of the season.
Southern Miss controlled the ball offensively, outshooting the Miners, 18-to-11, and took more corners, five-to-three.
Senior Kendell Mindnich (Melbourne Beach, Fla.-Melbourne) added another clean sheet to her books, making it four on the campaign. Seven Golden Eagles saw the full 90 minutes of action as five came off the bench.
Junior Madisyn Flammia (Panama City, Fla.-A. Crawford Mosley) came close to the opening goal in the 22' minute seeing her shot come off both the post and the crossbar. Less than ten minutes later in the 31st minute, the South American combo of Colombian Ilana Izquierdo and Brazilian Alice Campos saw the first goal of the game as Izquierdo threaded the needle, providing an inch-perfect pass as Campos rounded the UTEP keeper and slotted it into the back of the net.
Southern Miss went into the break with the 1-0 lead over the Miners.
Early in the second half, Nakano found Campos inside the box in the 52' minute as the Brazilian powered her shot into the net, giving Southern Miss the final scoreline of, 2-0.
The Golden Eagles will finish their C-USA regular season at home in Hattiesburg against the UTSA Roadrunners on Oct. 28 at 3 p.m.
