Golden Eagles Improve to 9-1 at Home with Sweep of UTSA

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Golden Eagles picked up another Conference USA sweep on Saturday, besting the UTSA Roadrunners in straight sets. Southern Miss picks up its 10th win of the season and improves to 2-2 in C-USA competition.
Duquesne Moratzka and Mia Wesley both recorded 11 kills, leading the Golden Eagle offense to victory, while Aliah Giroux, Wesley and Moratzka all tallied double-digit digs on the defensive side of the ball. Southern Miss held the UTSA attackers to a hitting percentage of .051 throughout the three set match.
Liana Guillemaud started her first match of the season for Southern Miss, recording six crucial kills, including four in the final set. The Golden Eagles continued their success at the Wellness Center and now hold a 9-1 record in Hattiesburg.Â
Set One, Southern Miss 25, UTSA 14: Moratzka led the way for Southern Miss in the opening set, racking up five of her team's 14 kills in the first frame. The Golden Eagle backcourt recorded 20 digs and held the Roadrunners to a hitting percentage of .083.Â
Kenzie Smith dished out 11 assists to open the match, while Giroux shined at the service line with three aces in the opening frame.Â
Set Two, Southern Miss 25, UTSA 19: Southern Miss continued to excel on the defensive side of the ball, racking up 30 digs in the second set and pushing past the Roadrunners, 25-19. UTSA could not get its offense going due to the Golden Eagle's sharp defense throughout the set.
While the Golden Eagles had less success in the hitting game, Cara Atkinson, Kinsley Hanback, Moratzka, Smith and Wesley combined for four team blocks in the second set.
Set Three, Southern Miss 25, UTSA 16: Southern Miss capped off an impressive defensive performance in the third and final set, holding UTSA to a hitting percentage of .040 and completing the sweep. The Golden Eagles were efficient on the offensive side of the ball, hitting at a .458 clip with 13 kills.
Guillemaud posted four kills in the final frame with a hitting percentage of .571 in the final frame, while Smith distributed 10 assists in the third set.Â
