HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Members of the Southern Miss women's tennis program head to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to take part in the ITA Southern Regional Tournament, hosted by the University of Alabama.
Monique Burton, Sarah Medik, Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Clara Tardivel will represent Southern Miss in singles and doubles competition.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association hosts 12 regional tournaments for Division I tennis players throughout the fall season. The champions and finalists of the singles tournaments and title holders in the doubles competitions then qualify for the ITA Fall Championships at the end of the season.
Yazgan enters this event off the heels of a stellar showing at the Natchitoches Women's Care Lady Demon Collegiate Invitational tournament in late September. She won all three matches on Sept. 24-25 and brought home a singles title. Yazgan knocked off Ayu Ishibashi of Northwestern State, who will also participate in the Southern Regional, in the finals of her bracket.
Burton and Medik also head to Tuscaloosa with a wave of momentum from their performances in Natchitoches, La. earlier this season. The pair won their doubles bracket, going 3-0 against opponents from Northwestern State and Southeastern.
Sophomore newcomer Clara Tardivel will take part in both singles and doubles competition for the Golden Eagles in Tuscaloosa. She went 2-1 in singles play in her last tournament, securing wins against two opponents from Stephen F. Austin.
The ITA Southern Regional begins on Oct. 14 and, depending on the success of each athlete, can finish as late as Oct. 19.
