Women's Golf Vaults up Leaderboard After Strong Second Round

JONESBORO, Ark. -Â The Southern Miss women's golf team moved up nine spots to finish tied for fifth place after the first day of the Lady Red Wolves Classic at Sage Meadows Country Club. Friend Chompitakdacha fired the low round for the Golden Eagles as the junior fired a two-under par 70 in the second round. Southern Miss' second-round 288 was the sixth-lowest round in program history and lowest since firing a third-round 282 at the USA Intercollegiate in 2018.Â
The Golden Eagles, as a team, carded a 596 to finish tied with Arkansas State (B) and 23 strokes behind Eastern Kentucky at the top of the leaderboard. Chompitakdacha had a team-high four birdies in her second round while Southern Miss netted 21 total birdies over 36 holes. Elena Melich finished tied for 14th after an even-par 72 to close out her day following a four-over par 76 in the first round.Â
Senior Tenley Moretti utilized a one-under par 71 during her second round to rebound from a first-round 79 and is tied for 26th after day one. Freshmen Momoka Ando and Merche Corbacho are tied for 34th and 47th, respectively. Ando carded a four-over par 76 in each of her rounds and Corbacho fired a seven-over par 79 and three-over par 75.Â
The Golden Eagles will tee off via a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
