HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- A week after its spring season began, the Southern Miss volleyball team will return to action Friday with a pair of contests against Southeastern Louisiana (12 and 5 p.m.).
These matches are closed to the general public but will stream for free on CUSA.tv. As part of this week's schedule changes, the team's postponed Thursday contest with Nicholls was also moved to Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Southern Miss (3-1) is coming off a home split last weekend, falling to Tulane (3-0) before defeating New Orleans (3-0). Kinsley Hanback was the team's top offensive performer with 20 kills and a .342 hitting percentage. As a team, the Black and Gold hit .319 against the Privateers, their highest mark since Nov. 5, 2018.
On the flip side, Southern Miss is yielding just a .142 hitting percentage through its four total matches, tops in the league.Â
Five of the Golden Eagle starters of the weekend are newcomers for this combined fall-and-spring campaign: Kenzie Smith, Lauren Talbert, Duquesne Moratzka, Nyanuer Bidit and Aliah Giroux. The first four are transfers while Giroux is a freshman from San Antonio.
Southeastern's debut is Thursday night against Tulane, and the Lady Lions had one of the greater stories nationally in 2019. Head coach Jeremy White, in his first year at the helm, guided the team to the third-highest win improvement in the country, taking the squad from two to 14 victories. The Lions return three starters and a libero, including Preseason All-Conference pick Karlee Wilkerson.
The Golden Eagles have a 34-22 edge in the all-time series, including 11-straight wins through 2018.Â
