HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Southeastern Louisiana to split a 1-3, 3-2 doubleheader with the Lady Lions on Friday.
"Our team just found a little more grit and got a little bit tougher [in the second match]," head coach Stephanie Radecki said. "Southeastern Louisiana is a really good team, and they showed that today and in last night's win against Tulane. It was nice to finish on a high note and see some success and have some girls come off the bench and do well for us. It was fun."
It marked the team's first two-set deficit to overcome and win since topping No. 1-seed Western Kentucky in the 2018 C-USA Quarterfinals.
Duquesne Moratzka tallied 33 kills on the day, with her 18 in the second match serving as a career-high. Madison Lawler also added 46 digs, and Kenzie Smith boasted a personal-best 49 assists in the five-set battle.
Match One (22-25, 25-23, 17-25, 23-25)
The Golden Eagles overcame a 20-18 deficit to defeat the Lady Lions 25-23 in the second set, its only victory of the session. The rally came with four-straight points by varying fashion: a block assist by Piper Matsumoto and Nyanuer Bidit, a kill by Kinsley Hanback, a Lady Lion attack error and finally a Lawler ace. Kills by Liana Guillemaud and Lauren Talbert helped seal the deal.
The first set never saw more than two points' separation until Southeastern pulled ahead 23-19. The third saw the Lady Lions jump out to 10-5 and 18-10 leads.
Southern Miss made a valiant effort in the fourth set with its backs against the wall. Trailing 14-7, the Black and Gold went on an 8-1 run to tie it at 15. The teams remained deadlocked back-and-forth until SLU pulled ahead 22-20 on a ball-handling error, prompting a timeout. A block-assist and kill followed that would be too much for Southern Miss to overcome.
Moratzka led the way with an efficient 15-kill, two-error contest on 40 attempts.
Match Two (22-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-8)
Southern Miss raced out to a 7-2 lead in the fifth set, and after SLU got within 9-7, the Golden Eagles called a timeout. They ended up with three-straight points and closed it out with a Moratzka kill and block assist by Moratzka and Hanback.
The fourth set saw both teams remain within two points of each other, but Chloe Klusman came off the bench and accounted for five points; two via blocks and the others on kills.
In the third, the Golden Eagles closed it out on a 6-2 run, with two of the latter points coming on Bidit kills.
