HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss started the game on a 13-0 run, holding the Roadrunners scoreless for the first six minutes and 24 seconds and didn't look back as the Lady Eagles put up a season-high in points defeating UTSA 88-64 on Friday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
"I thought tonight was a pretty good night for us," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "Kelsey Jones really stepped up tonight. It was the first game that she really played like she did last year towards the end of the year."
Jones matched a career-high with 21 points as the junior went 10-of-13 from the field surpassing her previous season-high of 12.
Freshman Kahia Warmsley got the offense going in the first half, scoring all of her career-high 11 points in the first 20 minutes of the contest, while Destiny Smith set a new career-high in rebounding, grabbing 11 boards. Brikayla Gray was one shy of matching her career best, finishing the game with 17 points.
Overall, the Lady Eagles (4-5, 2-5 C-USA) shot 64.3 percent from the field, eclipsing the over 60 percent mark for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Southern Miss knocked down 5-of-6 shots from beyond the arc in the contest and lead from start to finish.
The Golden Eagles locked the Roadrunners (2-10, 0-7 C-USA) down in the first ten minutes, holding UTSA to just 2-of-21 from the field and four points to jump out to a 26-4 lead after one quarter of play.
While UTSA was able to put some points on the board in the second, the Lady Eagle offense stayed hot as they scored a season-high 44 points going into the locker room.
Gray got going offensively in the third as she posted 10 of her 17 coming out of the locker room. The Black and Gold got 21 of their 26 points inside of the paint in the quarter.
A 76.9 percent effort from the field in the final quarter help the Lady Eagles seal their largest win of the season.
