HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- Ten months after its charmed season was cut short, the Southern Miss women's tennis team is set to serve it up at Mississippi State at 12 p.m. Friday to begin the 2021 season.
The Golden Eagles were 11-1 and on a six-match win streak (including a 4-1 victory over C-USA foe UTSA) before COVID-19 halted play. It would have ranked as the highest win percentage in program history.
This year's team returns 42 of its 47 singles victories, including Ebru Zeynep Yazgan (10-0) and Katia de la Garza (9-1). Sarah Medik is also back after being the first to earn All-Freshman honors in C-USA's three years of honoring such. Head coach Steve Schram enters his third year at the helm with a 99-41 overall record (23-6 at Southern Miss).
The Bulldogs were 9-5 in last year's shortened season that included a 2-2 mark in SEC play. They boast some preseason nationally-ranked talent in Magda Adaloglou/Tamara Racine (41) and Emma Antonaki (60).
These two Magnolia State teams have not faced each other since Feb. 27, 2016, when the No. 25 Bulldogs prevailed over No. 73 Southern Miss, 6-1 in Starkville.
