HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss soccer team may be without intercollegiate competition this fall, but that will not stop them from spreading their love of the game and representing the program.
Six of the team's players (Sarah Grimmett, Tay Collum, Madisyn Flammia, Olivia Durham and JoAnnie Ramos) ventured to Glory Bound over the weekend to visit with the Mississippi Rush U12 team that was in town for a tournament. The Golden Eagles played Jenga, cornhole and even took part in the championship medal ceremony.
Collum, a Brandon native who began her career at UAB, has helped out with the team in the past, particularly when she was home from school.
"It was great just to be around them for community involvement and be a positive influence as a role model, as well as being in that environment again," she said.
Flammia made 16 starts as a freshman last fall after moving from Panama City, Fla. She has had a fair amount of youth experience from her own coaching and her mother being a teacher.
"I was a coach for a 4- and 5-year-old coed team at home, then over the summer I worked some camps," she said. "I absolutely love working with kids, and with coaching, it's definitely something I would look into at the higher level. It's been awesome to watch Coach Carly [Mauldin] go from playing only a couple of years ago to being one of our assistants."
