HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- It has been a long summer away from campus, but Southern Miss senior women's golfer Julie Baker found some success in her home state Thursday by winning the 88th Alabama Women's State Amateur title, hosted by the Alabama Golf Association.
"We've been playing these tournaments throughout growing up," Baker, a native of Hoover, said. "I had never won one of these before. It's really competitive, so this was exciting especially after not finishing our spring season (due to COVID-19). My dad got to caddy for me, so that was fun too. It was a team effort."
The three-day event, held at the Huntsville Country Club, made for getting into the top-16 to have a shot at the crown. Baker earned the top seed to start (1-under 70) and had two match plays per day. It began with a 5&4 victory over Troy's Anna Claire Little.Â
The quarterfinals saw a 4&3 win over Lauren Thompson before a victory over Allison Howard of Samford in the semis. Baker then topped Troy's Elisabeth Preus by a 2&1 margin for the title.
Baker has competed in 16 tournaments as a Golden Eagle, leading the active roster. As a freshman in Fall 2017, she carded a 7-under 65 at the Carey Collegiate which stands as the school record.
