HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss right-handed pitcher Alex Nelms (Gulfport, Miss.) earned the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, presented by Conference USA, Thursday.
The 12th annual award is named in honor of Dr. Jim Castañeda who served Rice for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in 2008. Every season, C-USA grants the $4,000 scholarship to distinguished graduates selected by the league's Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
Each member institution in C-USA enjoyed one postgraduate selection and a total of 14 were selected.
During his Golden Eagle career, Nelms earned four letters and was a four-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and Academic Medal recipient during his time with the Golden Eagles.
Nelms appeared in 40 career games for Southern Miss, including three starts, and posted a 1-0 record with a 5.63 earned run average. He fanned 56 in 54 1/3 innings with only 22 walks.
