HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Four of five Southern Miss golfers improved their second-round scores, Monday, including Walker Kesterson, who fired a one-under 71 to help push Southern Miss up to 16th place at The Tiger Invitational, presented by Jason Dufner, in Opelika, Ala.
The Golden Eagles improved their team score by 12 strokes from the previous round by shooting a seven-over par 295 at the par 72, 7,289-yard Grand National on the Lake Course.
"I am proud of the way our guys bounced back today," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "We talked about what it would take to claw out of the hole we dug in round one - patience and toughness. I challenged our guys to show me how tough they are by bouncing back in round two.
"They bounced back with a good round today. This is so important because it now positions us to make a move up the board in the final round. If we play the golf we are capable of in the last round, we can leave here with some quality wins over some good teams."
Kesterson, a senior from Hartsburg, Mo., and freshman Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) each lead the Golden Eagles over 36 holes of play by placing tied for 28th with overall scores of 147. Latter shot a second-round 75 after opening his tournament with a 72 on Sunday.
Senior Matt Lorenz (Fairhope, Ala.) enjoyed a four-stroke improvement over his second round with a 74 and finds himself tied for 63rd with a 152. Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) bettered his second round stroke total by six strokes, shooting a 75 for a 156 total and a 79th-place tie and junior Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) enjoyed a seven-shot improvement to fire a 76 and enjoy a 159 total and a 94th-place tie.
ULM leads the team scoring with two-under 574, while the Golden Eagles trail are seven strokes out of a 14th-place tie with Georgia State and Chattanooga with a 602 stroke total.
The final round will start at 8 a.m., Tuesday, and fans can follow the action by clicking here.
