The win improved Southern Miss to 10-3, while the Trojans fell to 8-7.
Will McGillis, Danny Lynch, Charlie Fischer and Fisher Norris each drove in two runs despite the fact the Golden Eagles were limited to five hits in the game. Norris led the way with a couple hits in the contest.
Golden Eagle starter, Walker Powell, overcame a shaky first inning in which he allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and two Golden Eagle errors to throw seven strong frames.
Powell, who improved to 3-0 with the victory, finished with seven innings and allowed seven hits, four runs (two earned) on one walk and a season-high nine strikeouts. In all four starts this season, Powell has lasted at least seven innings.
After giving up three runs in the top of the first, the Golden Eagles came back with two in the bottom half of the frame. After a single by Gabe Montenegro and Reed Trimble reaching base on a fielding error by the Trojan leftfielder, Matt Guidry was hit by a pitch.
McGillis then hit a ball to third and the throw to second on the force out was wild and allowed two runs to score on the play. The Golden Eagles then took the lead with two more runs in the second off Little Rock starter Eli Sievert (1-2). After a leadoff walk to Andrew Stanley, Dustin Dickerson tripled to right when the rightfielder lost the ball in the lights to tie the score. Trimble then knocked in Dickerson two batters later on a groundout to second.
Southern Miss added five more unearned runs in the sixth, scoring three of those on just two hits – one a two-run single by Fischer and a RBI single from Norris – while taking advantage of four walks and an error in the frame to help account for the other two tallies.
Kale Emshoff finished Little Rock's scoring when he added his sixth home run of the year off of Powell in the fifth.
Guidry reached base all five times in the contest, four times by walk and hit by a pitch once, to increase his consecutive games of reaching base safely to 69 games. It was the first time a Golden Eagle was walked four times in a contest since Hunter Slater did it against Rice on April 16, 2017.
Sievert took the loss for the Trojans, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings.
The two teams continue the series with a 2 p.m., contest Saturday.
