Walker Powell Wins C-USA Pitcher of the Week Honor

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss senior right-handed pitcher Walker Powell (Fayetteville, Ark.) collected the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award, Monday, after throwing a complete-game shutout in last Saturday's outing against McNeese.
Powell limited the high-scoring Cowboys offense to just six hits, five of which were singles, along with no walks and six strikeouts as the Golden Eagles captured a 10-0 victory in eight innings.
The strikeout total was the most for Powell this season. He has thrown at least seven innings in each of his three of his starts and improved to 2-0 while lowering his earned run average to 0.82. Each of his outings has been a quality start, allowing three or fewer earned runs while throwing at least six innings.
The shutout was the second for Southern Miss in 2020 and also the second for Powell in his career. Powell also notched his fifth career complete game.
Powell, the preseason All-Conference USA pick, wins this award for the first time this season and fourth time over his career, after capturing the honor three times in 2019.
The Golden Eagles return to action this week when they travel to Pearl to face Mississippi State, Wednesday, March 4, in a 6 p.m., contest at Trustmark Park. Southern Miss is the designated road team in that contest.
