Yazgan Named C-USA Female Tennis Athlete of the Week

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Ebru Zeynep Yazgan of the Southern Miss Women's Tennis team was named C-USA Female Tennis Athlete of the Week, Conference USA announced Wednesday afternoon. It's the first time the Izmir, Turkey native has grabbed Athlete of the Week honors, and the first time a Golden Eagle has earned such honors this season.

"I am very happy to see that Ebru has been recognized for standout performances this past week," head coach Steve Schram said. "It's a testament to her hard work, experience, and attitude both on and off the court.

"Overall, I am pleased with Ebru's performance and I feel confident that she will continue to improve over these next few weeks leading to the conference tournament."

Yazgan backed the Golden Eagles (11-1, 2-0 C-USA) to a 4-3 win over Jacksonville State on Friday afternoon via a 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Kaya Balsen. Yazgan teamed up with Tanit Lopez at No. 3 doubles but went unfinished. The following day, the sophomore cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sienna Weeks from Mississippi Valley State. The win moved Yazgan's record to a team-best 10-0 mark. Yazgan and Lopez secured the doubles point for Southern Miss via a 6-0 win as the Golden Eagles defeated the Devilettes 7-0. It total, Yazgan dropped just one set in singles play and is outscoring her opponents 129-24 this season.

Southern Miss is off to its best start in program history while winning its last six matches. During the historic start, the Golden Eagles have lost just one doubles point in 12 tries.
