TROY, Ala. -- The Troy Trojans had the advantage over Southern Miss on their home courts Saturday, defeating the Golden Eagles 4-0.
"We knew it would be a tough test, but there is a lot of capability and potential in our team," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "We'll start fresh Monday to get ready for next weekend's matches."
This was only Southern Miss' third contest since Feb. 9.
Troy won the first two doubles sets, 6-2. The unfinished No. 3 court saw freshmen Vence N'Tcha and Emilio Bowen team up for the first time.
The Trojans were able to draw first blood in singles with a win on No. 6 and then another in No. 3 in a battle of each team's top performer: Oskar Michalek and Matthieu Peres. The Trojans took that one by a 6-2, 6-2 margin. Troy followed with a win on No. 2 that clinched the match.
Southern Miss will return home for three matches this weekend, first against Jacksonville State (Friday) and then Mississippi Valley State (Saturday) at 2 and 12 p.m., respectively. Saturday will be a doubleheader.
