Men's Tennis Concludes Weekend with Doubleheader Sweep of Delta Devils

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss avenged a 6-1 Friday defeat of Jacksonville State with a shutout sweep of Mississippi Valley State (4-0 in each) on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles improved to 8-5, with head coach Zubin Engineer earning his 99th win at the helm. This was also the team's first doubleheader since March 30, 2018 when it faced UAB and UTSA in San Antonio, winning both.

"We had a busy weekend and were happy to finish on a winning note," Engineer said. "Matthieu Peres has continued to play well in singles, and our team will continue to progress and find its identity in the second half of the season."

Peres won the team's only point against the Gamecocks on Friday, then was cruising in each of Saturday's contests that went unfinished. He is now a team-best 8-2 in singles. The Golden Eagles also saw doubles victories by Emilio Bowen/Vence N'Tcha and Antoine Androine/Hsiang Yi Wang to begin Saturday's action, but there were no doubles contests in the second game.

Southern Miss will have a fair amount of time off until it returns to the courts. Each of its next two matches will be in New Orleans against Colgate (March 17) and Loyola (March 20).
