Lady Eagles Head to Texas to Take on UTEP

Southern Miss continues to play the last four added by C-USA with the matchup on Saturday against UTEP.
EL PASO, TEXAS – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball hit the road to Texas to match up with UTEP in El Paso for the second time this season as a part of the last four games scheduled by Conference USA, with the tip set for 2pm CT in Don Haskins Center.

Southern Miss (14-12, 6-9) will meet UTEP (14-12, 7-8) for the second time this season, but this time on the Miners' home hardwood. The Lady Eagles fell to UTEP in the contest earlier this season in a 89-72 decision in Reed Green Coliseum. They were led by Shonte Hailes with 28 points. Southern Miss has been without Hailes for six games now due to injury.

The Lady Eagles are coming off a hard-fought loss against Charlotte, where they fell 59-55 in Reed Green Coliseum after a three-game winning streak on the road. It was senior night for the Lady Eagles, with all three seniors that were dressed being included on the starting lineup. Leaphart led the team in rebounds with 13, tying a career high, en route to a double-double with 11 points. Leaphart is the only player on the squad that has been given the starting nod in all games this season. Alarie Mayze led the team in points with 15 and played her first full game of her career. Southern Miss continues to be led in scoring by Leaphart with 374 total points this season, bringing her to 952 total in her career and 42 away from being a 1,000 point scorer. Leaphart also leads in rebounds with 159. Daishai Almond leads the team when it comes to dishing out assists as she's lent a hand 107 times in her sophomore campaign.Â

UTEP is also coming off a loss, falling to Middle Tennessee on their home court in a 92-80 decision. The Miners are led by Katarina Zec with 334 points, Ariona Gill with 225 rebounds, and Katiana Gallegos with 127 assists. It will be senior night for the Miners when the Lady Eagles face them on Saturday. The Miners are led by Kevin Baker who is in his third year in El Paso.Â

Last year, the Lady Eagles defeated the Miners on their home court by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Alarie Mayze. The contest ended at a score of 64-63 in El Paso.
