Lady Eagles Look to Stay Hot on Florida Swing Against FIU

The Lady Eagles come off a win at Florida Atlantic to face the Panthers.
MIAMI, Fla. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball are coming off a win against Florida Atlantic to face the Panthers of FIU on Saturday, with a 1pm CT start time set for Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
The Lady Eagles (12-11, 4-8) face FIU (5-18, 2-10) on their home court for the first time since 2017. The Panthers are 2-12 at home this season, with a 1-5 record on their home hardwood when facing a C-USA opponent.Â
Southern Miss is now led in two categories by senior Respect Leaphart. She eclipsed fellow senior Shonte Hailes' for the leader in points against FAU, where she came away with a season total of 325 points. Leaphart is averaging 14 points per game. She leads in rebounds for the team with 136. Daishai Almond continues to be the leading assister with 99 assists.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a fight-to-the-finish win against Florida Atlantic, where they defeated the Owls 71-67. They snapped the seven-game losing streak the Lady Eagles were suffering with that win. Alarie Mayze and Kelsey Jones led the team in scoring with 16 points each. Jones led her team in assists for the first time in her career with four, and Almond led in rebounds with nine. The Lady Eagles saw what Coach Joye Lee-McNelis called 'the best game at point guard of her career' for sophomore Daishai Almond. Southern Miss had 34 points in the paint against the Owls, and 22 points off the bench.
FIU is led by Jiselle Thomas in scoring with 249 points on the season and averages 10.8 points per game. Their leading rebounder is Chelsea Guimaraes, who has 167 for the year, and Be'Osha Scott in assists with 50. The Panthers are coming off a loss to LA Tech, where they were defeated at home, 44-68. They are currently on a losing streak of three, as they fell in overtime to FAU, 61-64 and fell at WKU 51-71.
