Southern Miss Softball Travels to Troy, Ala. for Troy Tournament

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (4-1) hits the road for the first time in 2020, traveling to Troy University to compete in the Troy Tournament.

The Last Time on the Diamond
In its last game played, Southern Miss shutout Southern University, 9-0 in five innings on Wednesday (Feb. 12) night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.

Noteworthy Moments vs. Southern University

Junior infielder Jamie Powell earned her first start of the season on. Powell started the game as the Golden Eagles' designated player.
Senior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin tallied her third double of the season and now leads the Golden Eagles in the doubles category.
Redshirt junior right fielder Amber Pack recorded the first triple of her Southern Miss career on.
Junior center fielder Destini Brown notched her first home run of the season after blasting a gram slam in the bottom of the third inning.
Redshirt junior second baseman ripped a single to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning, marking her first hit of the season.

Breaking Down the All-Time Records
Southern Miss will square off against Southeast Missouri State and Purdue Fort Wayne for the first time in program history on Saturday.

Southern Miss leads the all-time series against Eastern Illinois with a 2-0 record. Both games were played at neutral sites.

Troy leads the all-time series with a record of 15-6. The Golden Eagles are 1-8 when hosting the Trojans at home in Hattiesburg, 1-2 in contests play on the road in Troy and 4-5 in neutral site matchups.

The Last Meetings
The last time that Southern Miss battled Eastern Illinois was on March 6, 2010 in the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. Southern Miss won the contest, 6-2.

The last time that Southern Miss and Troy played against each other was on March 15, 2018 in a doubleheader in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss and Troy split the doubleheader with the Trojans taking game one, 8-5 and the Golden Eagles taking game two, 6-5.

The Opponents
Southeast Missouri State opened its season earlier today at the Troy Tournament. Southeast Missouri State was defeated by Kennesaw State, 6-4 in its first game of the day and then bounced back to capture a 16-15 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in nine innings in its second game.

After today's loss to Southeast Missouri State, Purdue Fort Wayne is currently 0-4 on the season.

Eastern Illinois is 4-1 on the season after posting a 4-1 record in the Samford Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. last weekend.

Troy is currently 3-1 on the season after going 3-1 in its Trojan Classic last weekend.
