Freshman Right-Handed Pitcher Savanna Wood Tosses No-Hitter in Southern Miss’ 9-0 Victory Over Southern University

The no-hitter marks the first of Wood’s Southern Miss career.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern softball team (4-1) shutout Southern University (0-6) by a final score of 9-0 on Wednesday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.
Golden Eagles' freshman right-handed pitcher Savanna Wood stole the spotlight on Wednesday night as she pitched the first no-hitter (five innings) of her Southern Miss career in what was her second start of the season. In addition to tossing a no-hitter, Wood also registered a career-high 10 strikeouts in the contest and picked up her second win of the season in as many appearances.

"I am so overwhelmed by how good this season is starting off. Plays like the one that Heather Hill made have me excited to pitch for a team as good as this one. I am eager to see how this season goes."
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when senior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin drilled a three-run bases-clearing double off of the wall in left field and then scored on a Jaguars' throwing error. Freshman second baseman Maddie Vasquez, sophomore left fielder Madison Rayner and junior center fielder Destini Brown all scored on Sumerlin's double.
Redshirt junior right fielder Amber Pack followed Sumerlin's double with an RBI triple to center field that scored Hannah Borden, extending the Golden Eagles' lead to 5-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, junior center fielder Destini Brown broke things open for Southern Miss when she launched a grand slam over the wall in left center field. Vasquez, Rayner and junior first baseman Karley Nichols were the runners aboard the bases when Brown homered.

The Golden Eagles will hit the road for the first time in 2020 when they travel to Troy, Ala. to compete in the Troy Tournament hosted by Troy University. Southern Miss will open the tournament on Saturday (Feb. 15) with a 9:00 a.m. (CT) contest against Southeast Missouri State (0-0) and will then take on Purdue Fort Wayne (0-3) at 2:00 p.m. (CT). On Sunday (Feb. 16) Southern Miss will square off against Eastern Illinois (4-1) at 11:30 a.m. (CT) and wrap up the tournament with a 4:00 p.m. (CT) matchup against Troy (3-1).
