KYLE, Texas -- Darkness forced an early Monday conclusion, but the Southern Miss women's golf team cut strokes off each round and ultimately finished No. 11 at the Texas State Invitational.
Four of the team's five participants improved their third round scores from the second, highlighted by Julie Baker's 10. Friend Chompitakdacha's 76 helped her to tie for 24th, her fourth appearance in the top-25 out of five events this year. She had a pair of birdies in the final round.
The Golden Eagles also finished the tourney with the fourth-best score on par-threes, with Chompitakdacha tying UT Arlington's Madigan Murray for the top par-three score overall. The team's perfect stroke trend marked its second-such occurrence this year, also at the Lady Paladin Invitational.
Valeria Pichardo produced three birdies in the second round and one more in the third. Her 17-over 233 was one stroke off a career-best, the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate. Her 74 in the second matched a career-low, as well as serving as the team's top score for the week.
Maria Toledo Bailey held firm with a consistent 78-78-77 for a 233 in her collegiate debut, tying with Pichardo for No. 31. Baker had back-to-back birdies on No. 1 and 2 in the final round to key her improvement.
Southern Miss returns to action in its most local tournament of the season, competing in the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at the English Turn Country Club in New Orleans (Sunday-Tuesday).
