HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (3-1) will host Southern University (0-4) in a single-game midweek matchup on Wednesday (Feb. 12) night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.

The Last Time on the Diamond
The last time that the Golden Eagles took the field, they came away with a 3-1 record in the Black & Gold Invitational this past weekend.

Southern Miss kicked off the Brian Levin era by defeating Mississippi Valley State 8-0 in six innings on Friday night.

The Golden Eagles continued their success on day two of the tournament by capturing a 9-1 victory over Saint Louis in five innings on Saturday.

On Sunday, Southern Miss fell to Saint Louis, 5-4 but bounced back with a 13-1 win against Mississippi Valley State in five innings, ending the Black & Gold Invitational on a positive note.

Southern Miss vs. Mississippi Valley State (Feb. 7)

Southern Miss' win against Mississippi Valley State on Friday night, marked the first of Brian Levin's Golden Eagle coaching career.

After defeating Mississippi Valley State on Friday night, the Southern Miss softball program now holds a 12-6 record in home openers.
Freshman catcher Hannah Borden's RBI double in the first inning of Friday night's contest marked the first hit of her Southern Miss career.
Borden tallied the first home run of her Southern Miss career after belting a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning of the Golden Eagles' Friday night contest.
Sophomore left fielder Madison Rayner registered two triples in a single game for the first time in her Southern Miss career after hitting two on Friday night.
Against Mississippi Valley State on Friday night, sophomore right-handed pitcher Kaylan Ladner picked up her first win of the season and also tossed the second shutout of her Southern Miss career.

Southern Miss vs. Saint Louis (Feb. 8)

Freshman right-handed pitcher Savanna Wood made the first appearance and start of her Southern Miss career.
Wood also recorded eight strikeouts and earned her first win as a Golden Eagle.
Redshirt junior right fielder Amber Pack notched her first home run of the 2020 season.
Rayner's fifth inning triple marked her third of the 2020 season.

Southern Miss vs. Saint Louis (Feb. 9)

Rayner smacked her fourth triple of the season after notching a triple in the top of the third inning.
Freshman second baseman Maddie Vasquez's RBI double to left center in the top of the fifth inning marked the first hit of her collegiate career.

Leading the NCAA
After racking up four triples over the course of four games played in the Black & Gold Invitational, Rayner currently leads all of NCAA Division I Softball in triples.

Where Else Rayner Ranks
In addition to leading NCAA Division I softball in triples, Rayner also ranks third in slugging percentage (1.778) and fourth in batting average (.778) and on-base percentage (.833).

After posting impressive numbers in the Black & Gold Invitational, Southern Miss is currently ranked in the Top 25 in six offensive categories in NCAA Division I Softball.

The Last Meeting
The last time that Southern Miss and Southern University met on the softball diamond was on February 27, 2019 when the two teams played a midweek contest at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.

Southern Miss won the contest by a final score of 11-0 in five innings.

In what was her junior season, right-handed pitcher Bailie Springfield tossed the first complete game shutout of her Southern Miss career.

The Opponent
The Jaguars are led by Head Coach John Garris who is currently in his sixth season at the helm of the Southern University softball program.

This past weekend, the Jaguars competed in the ULM Tournament in Monroe, La. and finished the tournament with an 0-4 record. Southern University was defeated by Stephen F. Austin and ULM on Friday night by scores of 3-0 and 9-1 respectively. On Saturday, Southern University dropped its final two contests of the tournament to Stephen F. Austin and ULM by scores of 7-1 and 5-0 respectively.
