Hunter Stanley Named to NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Seventy players, including Southern Miss senior right-handed reliever Hunter Stanley (Hammond, La.), have been named to the initial Watch List for the 16th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award, Monday, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball.

Stanley posted a 5-2 record in his only season with the Golden Eagles in 2019 which included a team-high four saves. He collected a team-high 29 relief appearances, while adding a 3.07 ERA with 36 strikeouts and only 10 walks over 41 innings.

In his Southern Miss debut, Stanley captured a victory a scoreless 1 2/3 inning stint against Purdue (2/17) and did not allow a run over his first nine appearances, spanning 11 innings.

His longest outing of four innings came against Arizona State (6/2) in which the Golden Eagles rallied to win that game in their final at bat. Stanley surrendered a .154 batting average against first batters faced in an outing.

In total, 22 conferences are represented on this list with at least two players coming from 18 different leagues.

The NCBWA, founded in 1962, presents the Dick Howser Trophy to the nation's top player and the Mike Martin National Coach of the Year to the nation's top coach. It also selects All-America Teams for all Divisions, a Division I Freshman All-American team, Division I, II and III Players of the Week and Division I, II and III Players of the Year.

Southern Miss opens the 2020 season this Friday, Feb. 14, against Murray State in the first of a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park.
