HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss Gold pitchers combined to throw a seven-inning no-hitter as they defeated the Southern Miss Black squad 1-0 in the opening game of the 2020 Fall World Series Friday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
Chandler Best, Tyler Stuart and Ryan Och combined to fan 11 Black team hitters and walked just three in the no-hitter. Best struck out nine and walked one, which came in the opening frame, over a five-inning stint. Stuart then threw 1 2/3 innings and fanned one with two walks, while Och whiffed Michael Latulas to end the contest and earn the save.
The Gold squad managed just four hits as Brady Faust led the way with a pair of singles, while Slade Wilks added a single of his own. The big blow, though, came from Chris Sargent, who belted a fourth-inning leadoff homer over the leftfield wall for the only run of the game.
Hunter Stanley got tagged with the loss, allowing the lone run on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks over five innings of work.
The best-of-five series continues with Game 2 on Saturday. The scrimmage will be closed to the general public.
