Game Postponements
• Southern Miss has had its last two games versus Florida Atlantic and UTEP postponed due to COVID-19. These were the first two COVID-19 related postponements of a Southern Miss football game. In conjunction with Conference USA, the respective schools are working on rescheduling these two contests later this season. These were the first postponements for the Golden Eagles since the 2018 season (Sept. 12) when the squad was supposed to play at Appalachian State, but was postponed and never made up, due to Hurricane Florence. That game did not get made up.
Â
The Liberty Series
• The two teams play for the first time in their football history when they meet in Lynchburg this weekend.
• It is the first of a two-game series between the two schools. The pair are scheduled to play in Hattiesburg on Sept. 3, 2022.Â
• Liberty coach Hugh Freeze is a 1992 graduate of Southern Miss. This will be the first time Freeze has faced his alma mater as an opposing coach.
• The Flames have two players listed on their roster from the state of Mississippi, including CB Emanuel Dabney (Jackson/Callaway HS) and CB Deon Biggins (Horn Lake/Horn Lake HS).
• The Golden Eagles make their first trip to the state of Virginia since dropping a 51-35 C-USA decision to Old Dominion on Nov. 12, 2016. This will be only the third game played for the program in the state since 2011, when Southern Miss defeated Virginia 30-24 on Sept. 24 that year.
A Golden Eagles Win over Liberty would...
• give the Golden Eagles a victory in the first meeting between the schools and an initial win against the 72nd different current FBS school that they have played in their history
• be the second-straight victory for the program and coach Scotty Walden in 2020
• allow the Golden Eagles to win consecutive games since winning three straight (Rice, UAB, UTSA) in 2019
• improve the Golden Eagles record in games played in the state of Virginia to 8-7
• snap a four-game losing streak against non-conference opponents dating back to last season
An Interim for the Interim
• With Southern Miss interim coach Scotty Walden not traveling this week for the Golden Eagles after testing positive for COVID-19, the Golden Eagles will look to Tim Billings, who is coaching in his 41st year as its acting head coach this weekend. Billings, who was the head coach at Southeast Missouri State from 2000-05, has been with Southern Miss since 2016.
