Men’s Golf Posts Seventh-Place Showing at First Tee/Little Rock Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss players registered below par rounds over the final 18 holes Tuesday to lift Southern Miss to a seventh-place finish at the First Tee/Little Rock Invitational in Little Rock, Ark.
Being played at the par-72, 7,115-yard Founder's Course at the Chenal Country Club, junior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) led the way over the final 18 holes with a 69, while junior Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) and senior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) each added a 71 to help the Golden Eagles improve their final team standing by three places.
Atkins birdied three of his final 12 holes to shot his low round for the fall, while also posting his second career Golden Eagle round in the 60s.
The Golden Eagles ended with a team score of four-under-par 284 to finish with a 54-hole total of 861.
Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) enjoyed the highest finish with a 13th-place tie, after firing a 75 over his final 18 holes to end with a 214 total. Richards ranked second among Golden Eagle finishers by posting a 216 total for a 24th-place tie while Atkins ended at 217, which was good for a 28th-place tie.
Lorenz put together a 223 total score – finishing his tournament in a 48th-place tie – while freshman Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) shot a 73 over his final round for a 224 and a 52nd-place tie and freshman Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) collected a 74 and a 226 total to place tied for 59th.
Host Little Rock won the team event with a 35-under 829, followed by Arkansas State (846), UT Arlington (848), ULM (849), Louisiana (852), Abilene Christian (853), Southern Miss (861), Texas State and Lamar (863), Louisiana Tech (866), South Alabama (877), Central Arkansas (886), Southern Illinois (893) and Missouri State (903).
