Game Notes
– Southern Miss dropped a 65-63 heartbreaker to Middle Tennessee on Saturday. LaDavius Draine picked up an offensive rebound and made a game-tying three-pointer with 11 seconds left, but the Golden Eagles were called for a foul with one tick left on a layup that allowed the Blue Raiders to convert the winning free-throws. Boban Jacdonmi, off the bench, produced his second double-double (16 points, career-high 12 rebounds). The 21 minutes were his most since Gonzaga (Nov. 27). Southern Miss allowed a season-low 35.1 field-goal percentage, and the 65 points marked the lowest since Tulane on Dec. 4.
– The Golden Eagles had won two in a row heading into the game while also boasting its two best offensive games in that time. Thursday's victory over UAB saw Draine (28 points) and Gabe Watson (27) lead the way with career-highs and marked the first teammates with 25-plus points since March 12, 2009, also against UAB. Five Golden Eagles have produced 27-plus points in a game this year, which leads the nation (as of Jan. 23).
– While Thursday's win was an offensive clinic, Saturday's was a newer challenge to the team's depth, as Jay Malone and David McCoy were inactive for the second-straight game. Watson took a hit to the jaw in the first half, and if not for the next three minutes on the bench, he would have played the full 40 for a second-straight game. Artur Konontsuk has returned to the starting lineup, and each of his last two games (28 and 33 minutes) were his most playing time since Gonzaga.
– The last meeting between these teams saw Southern Miss win 59-52 in Norfolk on the Monarchs' Senior Day after they had clinched the C-USA title their previous game. Draine poured in 18 points off the bench via 4-for-8 shooting from deep, and Leonard Harper-Baker added a career-high 15 rebounds. ODU won the previous battle, 76-62, that season, with Harper-Baker also adding a then-personal-best 14 boards. Over the two games (both on the road), Southern Miss held ODU to 38.5 percent shooting (33.3 from deep).
– Southern Miss, in league play, leads C-USA with an 82.8 free-throw percentage (106-for-128). It was at 68.6 percent in non-conference action. The 74.7-percent clip for the year would be a program record, besting the 2011-12 NCAA Tourney squad (73.6). Several notable improvements have been made with three of the six returners. Watson is up 12.4 percent, Tyler Stevenson 23.6 and Jacdonmi 45.6 (was 4-for-12, now 30-for-38).
– Stevenson's home splits have been quite favorable. leading the team in scoring (16.7 ppg), field-goal percentage (62.0), free-throw makes (26) and percentage (74.3). He also has just five turnovers in 245 minutes. In league play, the former walk-on is third with 8.1 rpg. He averaged 2.3 for his entire freshman season.
– Draine has 151 three-pointers in his career, which ranks fourth in school history. He has made a career-high seven twice, first against UTEP last season and also against Tougaloo on Dec. 21. Next up is Neil Watson at 164 from 2011-14. He has also continued to diversify his game with layups and inside jumpers He already has more assists (31) and steals (25) than the last two years combined. Draine has made his last 17 foul shots, all in league play, and it leads C-USA as well (missed his final attempt in Tougaloo game). It's the eighth-longest streak in school history and the best since Kourtlin Jackson (22) from Feb. 27 - March 5, 2016.
– The Golden Eagles are attempting a league-low 15.0 three-pointers per game (C-USA games only), and their 25.8 percent success-rate is just ahead of ODU (24.3). Turnover-wise, all six of the Black and Gold victories have come when winning or tying that battle. The Monarchs are seeking their second road win of the season, and their last three road games (Marshall, WKU, Charlotte) were defeats by a combined nine points. ODU is allowing only 63.9 ppg for the year.
