Golden Eagles Win Six Events at Samford Invite

Track and Field had a strong showing at the second indoor meet of the season.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southern Miss Track and Field squad continued their winning ways in the second indoor meet of the season at the Samford Invite as five individual events and one relay were won.

Sandra Szpott won the 3000m, while Ashlee Osaji won the long jump, and Kameliah Style dominated the weight throw. On the men's side, Eric Richards took first in the high jump, Patton Little won the mile, and the A team won the 4x400 relay with Kacey Spinks, Trey Johnson, Landon Chalden and DJ Butler.

"Callie Jones was outstanding with two personal records in the high jump and 60 hurdles. Kameliah Style winning the weight throw with a personal best really gave us some energy to start the meet too. We had good performances across all event areas, so it was a great tune up before heading to Houston in two weeks."

Men's
200m – Trey Johnson finished in seventh at 22.19, Elijah Burton came in eighth at 22.51, Jordan Woods at 22.64 in 11th, Keirston Paige in 15th at 22.74, and Lance Williams in 17th with a time of 22.80.
400m – DJ Butler had a second-place finish with a time of 49.01, Landon Chalden came in fourth at 49.46, Dylan Evans finished in ninth at 50.64, Kacey Spinks had an 11th place finish in 50.86, and Asher Marshall finished in 29th in 52.80.
Mile – Patton Little came in first place with a time of 4:13.91, Dylan Allen finished in fifth in 4:24.39, and Preston Burks finished in 10th at 4:33.09.
60mH – Christian Strong came in fourth place at 8.38, and Tamrin Hobbs finished in fifth just a few milliseconds off 8.38.
4x400m Relay – The A team of Spinks, Johnson, Chalden and Butler finished in first with a time of 3:16.19. Team B of Tamrin Hobbs, Jordan Woods, Dylan Evans and Asher Marshall finished in fifth at 3:26.14.
High Jump – The senior Eric Richards finished in first place with a height of 7'0.5".Â
Long Jump – Eric Washington finished in second place with a distance of 22'4.5", Lance Williams finished in fifth at 21'10.75", and DJ Hurd finished in eighth at 21'1.5".
Triple Jump – Tyler Proctor had a third-place finish with a distance of 43'8".
Shot Put – Joe Wager came in ninth with a throw of 43'10".
Weight Throw – Bethal Miles had a 12th place finish with a throw of 43'10", Trevor Leinstock came in 13th at 43'2.25", and Joe Wager finished in 15th at 41'0.25".

Women's
200m – Keiyana Gaskin led the ladies in fifth place at 25.00, Savi'a Varnell finished in seventh at 25.52, Jasmine Griffin came in 13th at 26.26, Angel Williams finished in 15th at 26.41, and Ashlee Osaji came in 17th at 26.59.
400m – Junior Maresha Chandler took fourth place at 58.09, Taylor Harris finished in 13th at 59.50, and Aireanna Taylor came in 15th at 59.67.Â
800m – Sarah McMillon came in fifth place with a time of 2:18.74.
Mile – Senior Regen McGee finished in second place with a time of 5:03.93, Theresa Harto finished in fifth at 5:05.81, and Monika Gebarzewska came in sixth at 5:08.02. Junior Savannah McMillon finished in ninth at 5:13.85 while freshman Katelyn Cartwright came in 12th at 5:18.45.
3000m – Sandra Szpott came in first place at 9:44.26, and Lina May was not far behind in second at 9:52.50. Emma Kate Holdbrooks also kept pace, finishing in fourth at 10:12.49.
60mH – Marquasha Myers came in second place at 8.76, Callie Jones finished in fifth at 8.97, a new personal best, and Jasmine Griffin finished in eighth at 9.13.
4x400m Relay – The relay squad of Maresha Chandler, Savi'a Varnell, Aireanna Taylor and Taylor Harris came in third place at 3:52.12.
High Jump – Zaria Jones had a second-place showing with a mark of 5'5", with Callie Jones just behind her, also at 5'5". It was a personal best for Callie.
Long Jump – Ashlee Osaji took home the first-place finish at 19'0.75", Callie Jones finished in sixth at 17'4.25", and Grace Parker finished in 14th at 16'5.75".
Triple Jump – Marquasha Myers finished in second place in the triple jump with a mark of 38'1.5".Â
Shot Put – A throw of 41'7.25" put Logan Lewis in fifth place.
Weight Throw – Kameliah Style finished in first place with a throw of 56'11.25", Isabella Simonelli came in third at 53'3" and Logan Lewis finished in ninth at 45'5.75".

The Golden Eagles will hit the road again for Houston and the Houston G-5 and Mid-Major Invitational. The meet begins on Friday, Jan. 31 and will continue through Saturday, Feb. 1.
