Lady Eagles Continue Conference Home Play With UTSA

The Roadrunners come to Southern Miss off a win at LA Tech.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball look to finish their four-game homestand with a Conference win against UTSA on Saturday afternoon in Reed Green Coliseum.Â
Tip for the game against Southern Miss and UTSA is set for 4 p.m., and USM continues honoring their active and retired military by offering two free tickets when a military ID is presented at the ticket box office.Â
Southern Miss (9-4, 1-1) take on the Roadrunners (6-8, 2-1) for just the 11th time in their histories. This matchup has only taken place in the past six seasons, with the first game taking place in Reed Green Coliseum in January of 2014. The Lady Eagles lead the series 9-1 with a 6-0 record in the Green House. Southern Miss has a winning streak of six against UTSA and look to extend that streak on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a battle with UTEP in which USM made a comeback to cut the Miners' lead to eight with four minutes to go in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get it done in time to walk away with the win. The Lady Eagles ultimately fell 89-72 to UTEP. In that game, Shonte Hailes put up 28 points, her third 20-point game of the season. Hailes now has 226 points in her senior campaign. The freshman, Liz Gibbs, continues to improve with each game as she put up 10 points for the first time against UTEP. Daishai Almond dished out seven assists to help her teammates and continues to lead the team in assists with 50.Â
UTSA, led by Head Coach Kristen Holt, is led by Mikayla Woods with 192 points so far this season. The Roadrunners come to Southern Miss after defeating LA Tech 82-73 in Ruston on Jan. 9. Timea Toth leads in rebounds with 88 and Karrington Donald leads in assists with 36. Holt is in her third season with the Roadrunners. In addition to beating LA Tech, their other Conference win came against FIU, 60-45. They fell to Florida Atlantic at home, 53-80.
The last time the two met was March 2, 2019 where the Lady Eagles defeated the Roadrunners, 72-39 at home. In that contest, Megan Brown scored her 1,000th point on her senior night. She and Hailes both put up 12 points that night, and Brown also led the team in rebounds with six. Hailes led in assists with five and Alarie Mayze had four steals.
