GREENVILLE, S.C. -- One event removed from having her lowest-career round and top finish, Friend Chompitakdacha raised the bar even higher with a 3-under 69 to finish tied for 12th at the Lady Paladin Invitational.
It marks the best round and finish by a Golden Eagle since Valentina Haupt (69 and fourth) at the MountainView Intercollegiate and C-USA Championships, respectively, last spring. Chompitakdacha, playing in just her seventh collegiate tournament, also had a team-high five birdies on the day.
The successes go beyond her performance. Every Golden Eagle improved their scores from Saturday's second round, including Valeria Pichardo's 75 that was one off a career-low set in the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate earlier this month. Tenley Moretti, like Pichardo, had a perfect three-round reduction throughout the weekend. The team's 299 was its lowest stroke-total in 12 rounds, dating back to the MountainView Intercollegiate.
"Today was a good bounce-back round," head coach Lucy Nunn said. "We've had a lot of growing pains the last six rounds [this season], and I think this was a turning point for us. Friend has been trending in the right direction, and it was awesome to see her put it all together today."
No. 1 Wake Forest captured the title with a 1-under 863, and host Furman's Natalie Srinivasan took home the individual crown with a 5-under 211.
Southern Miss will return to more familiar surroundings after a short break with the Magnolia Collegiate in West Point, Miss., from Oct. 13-15.
