HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team completes a three-game road swing Saturday when they face No. 2 Alabama for an 11 a.m., contest at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The game can be seen on ESPN 2 as well as heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network from Learfield IMG College.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) have split the pair of road games during this stretch, having dropped a 38-15 decision at Mississippi State before defeating Troy 47-42 in an offensive affair.
Now, the Golden Eagles travel to Tuscaloosa for the first time since the 2014 campaign, when they dropped a 52-12 decision. The two schools had played each season between 1992 and 2005 and has never been played outside the state of Alabama, as the game has been played in Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile, dating back to the 1947 campaign.
Southern Miss enjoyed one of its top program victories in its history during the 1982 campaign, defating the legendary Crimson Tide coach, Paul "Bear" Bryant, 38-29, in his final home game while also snapping a 57-game home winning streak for Alabama.
When the two schools meet this weekend, it will mark the highest ranked Associated Press opponent for Southern Miss since they played No. 2 Florida on Aug. 30, 1997. Southern Miss dropped that contest 21-6.
The Golden Eagles will have junior quarterback Jack Abraham lead the way for them against the Crimson Tide. Abraham has thrown for 990 yards on 64-of-90 passes for a 71.1 completion percentage to go along with five touchdown throws.
His main targets will be the duo of Jaylond Adams, who has caught 18 passes for 257, while Quez Watkins has caught seven balls for 209 yards and a pair of scores. Adams, one of four Golden Eagles to register a touchdown via kickoff and punt returns in his career, boasts two kick returns for scores already this season to go along with one punt returns for a touchdown.
On defense, senior DQ Thomas leads the way with 24 tackles, including four for loss, which includes two sacks, and an interception.
Alabama Heisman Trophy candidate, junior quarterback Tua Tagovailioa, who has thrown for 1,007 yards over his first three games with 12 touchdown passes and no interceptions, highlights an extremely talented offensive squad that has rolled up 562.0 total yards per game.
On defense, Xavier McKinney paces the Crimson Tide with a team-high 24 tackles to go along with an interception.
Following the Alabama contest, the Golden Eagles return home next week to open Conference USA play with UTEP, Saturday, Sept. 28. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
