HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team opened fall practice last Saturday at Pete Taylor Park as they begin preparations to challenge for another Conference USA crown and trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 40-21 season a year ago en route to capturing their third Conference USA tournament title over the last four seasons. In all, Southern Miss boasts five Conference USA regular season titles and five tournament titles since the league was formed in 1996 as well as a total of 16 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Southern Miss ranks as one of five Division I baseball programs to have accumulated 40 win seasons in at least each of the last four seasons. Over that four-year span, the program has won 175 games which is the most by the team in any four-year period in its history.
As Scott Berry enters his 11th season as head coach, he welcomes back 16 letterwinners, including five starters, and 16 newcomers.
The 2019 starters returning include junior Gabe Montenegro (Guatemala City, Guatemala), who notched a .342 average with six homers and 25 RBI, senior Matthew Guidry (Hattiesburg, Miss.), who put together a .297 average with eight homers and 47 and sophomore Danny Lynch (Jupiter, Fla.), who collected a .297 batting mark with a pair of homers and 40 RBI.
The Golden Eagles also welcome back Conference USA first-team pick Walker Powell. The senior right-handed pitcher from Fayetteville, Ark., posted a 6-2 record with a 2.72 earned run average. Another starting pitcher back is sophomore Gabe Shepard (Mobile, Ala.), who despite limited innings, put together a 3-0 record with a 2.35 ERA and also tossed 7 1/3 innings in the school's first no-hitter since 2004. Out of the bullpen, Southern Miss also returns senior Hunter Stanley (Hammond, La.), who collected a 5-2 record with four saves and a 3.07 ERA last season.
Normal practice occurs weekdays from 3-6 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park. They will be going through an intrasquad scrimmage this Sunday at 4:30 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park. Please note that the general public is invited to attend practice as well as intrasquad games.
The baseball team also has scheduled a pair of fall exhibition contests this October, playing host to William Carey and traveling to Alabama. The Golden Eagles will entertain the Crusaders at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field on Sunday, Oct. 13, while traveling to Tuscaloosa, Sunday, Oct. 27, to face the Crimson Tide. Game times have not been set as of yet.
