KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Southern Miss shaved five strokes off each of its first and second-round scores, and the Golden Eagles finished 14th out of 16 in the season-opening, Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate.
Friend Chompitakdacha carded a career-low 71, which included three birdies. Her 25th-place finish was also the best of her six-career tournaments. Tenley Moretti produced an eagle (Southern Miss' second of the tourney) on the par-five, 515-yard No. 5 hole to go along with three more birdies. Valeria Pichardo also took six strokes off her second-round total, which on the week was bested only by Baker's 11-stroke improvement from Monday's first two rounds.
Kent State captured the team crown and had two individuals compete in a one-hole playoff to decide the individual title. Tennessee, the event host, knocked off 20 strokes in the final round to finish fourth.
"This week was a great gut check for us," head coach Lucy Nunn said. "I think we knocked some rust off and had some positives to take back, but there's a lot of work to be done at home before we leave for Furman."
The Lady Paladin Invitational will run from Sept. 27-29 in Greenville, S.C.
