The honor marks the first C-USA Player of the Week honor of Pierce’s Southern Miss career.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior defender Caitlin Pierce has been named C-USA Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 15, the league announced on Monday. This marks the first time that Pierce has garnered C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors during her Southern Miss career.
The Pantego, Texas native had an outstanding week on the pitch as she led a Southern Miss defense that posted two shutouts. Pierce earned starts in both of Southern Miss' matches this past week, playing a full 90 minutes in both. She had her best game of the season on Friday night, recording an assist, a point and playing lockdown defense in a 2-0 win against Auburn. Thanks to the defensive efforts of Pierce and the rest of the Golden Eagles, Southern Miss became the first team to shutout Auburn this season.
Southern Miss' Friday night victory over Auburn was one for the record books as it was the first time that Southern Miss has ever defeated Auburn in women's soccer. The win also marked the first time that Southern Miss had defeated an SEC opponent in women's soccer since 2013.
In Sunday's match against Jackson State, Pierce collected her first shot attempt of the season and once again led the defensive charge for the Golden Eagles that ultimately resulted in their fourth consecutive shutout of the season. The four consecutive shutouts are the most consecutive shutouts posted by any Southern Miss women's soccer team since 2003.
Pierce on being named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week
"I am honored to represent Southern Miss, and will continue to remain humble and hard-working to keep this standard at a high."
Pierce and the Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday, September 21 at 4:00 p.m. (CT) when they open Conference USA play against the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers. Saturday's match will be played at the WKU Soccer Complex in Bowling Green, Ky.
